Maia- ‘The Greek goddess of spring, growth and the earth.’
I have a secret for you.
There’s a different way of doing things.
A way that allows flowers to blossom in the gentle breezes of forests, and sweet summer rains to cleanse. A way that spreads smiles across the faces of artisans whose hands have created the fabric that caresses your skin. A way that is about lazy Sunday afternoons spent sipping soul-warming tea on the verandah. A way of living that is truly luxurious.
The Maia blog is a place for me to share my personal growth towards a more natural, eco-conscious way of living. I hope along the way to inspire you to join me in questioning the ‘way things are done’ and instead look to a more conscious, ethical and sustainable lifestyle.
One balmy summer day I was chatting with my conservative best friend and I had the courage to tell her, with a hint of trepidation, that I was only purchasing ‘ethically’ from now on. I thought I would receive an eye-roll or blank stare as I’d secretly considered myself a quiet hippie compared to my friends. In reality, the reaction I got from her was the quintessential, ‘wait? You too! I thought it was just me!’
My gorgeous best friend was not someone I’d pegged to be into sustainability or ethical purchasing. But in that groundbreaking moment over Earl Grey tea, I realized that I was not. The. Only. One. In fact, there are so many of us, mainly Millenials, who aren’t satisfied with how things are being done. We are pushing towards a more transparent, justice-driven and sustainable future. And we want to look great while doing it.
I want to have the courage to ask the questions that other people aren’t asking. Things like, ‘who made this T-shirt and how are they treated?’ I want to show kindness through my choices, and an awareness of their impact on other people, and the planet. I want to spend my time connecting with like-minded people in a sincere way that builds a community. I want slow Sundays and toes padding through soft grass.
By no means am I prescribing that this is how we all have to live our lives. I’m just sharing what works for me and I hope to inspire you to live a life of new luxury.
