There is very little in this world that is as beautiful, calming and freeing as a good bath. I adore floating in the warm water as all the worries of the world float away. Yet in this busy world, this simple self-care method is one of the first practices to fall off the list.
The Japanese have it so right with their onsens and bathing rituals. Taking that quiet, peaceful time to reconnect with your mind and body is liberating, meditative and transformative.
You don’t need to travel to Hakone to experience the bliss that comes from a bathing ritual, though. Your own home can serve as a portal to a soothing, peaceful spa.
How to Create a Bathing Ritual
- Put down the tech! You can go an hour without your phone or iPad. So before your bath, put your devices on silent and in the other room.
- Keep hydrated. It’s a good idea to drink a large glass of cool water before your bath, especially if you enjoy super hot baths which can cause you to sweat out toxins (great for your liver, not so great for your hydration levels).
- Dry-brush beforehand to exfoliate dead skin cells, promote circulation and drainage. This is something that I know I forget to do regularly, so adding into a weekly (or nightly) bathing ritual is a great way to remember.
- Add bath salts or soaks. A whole range of salts and soaks exist to help ease a variety of ailments from insomnia to aching feet, detoxing to irritated dry skin. You’ll discover my favourites below.
- Surround your bath with beautiful things. For you, this may be fresh flowers or perhaps softly lit candles.
- Take your time and block out a solid hour for this ritual. Don’t feel guilty about taking time for yourself. Self care is self preservation and we are all entitled to an hour to soothe our bodies and minds.
- Once you dry off, wrap yourself in a warm towel and lie down quietly for ten minutes. Let your body slowly acclimate and come back to reality again.
I love using a bath routine to help wind down from the day. In fact, it’s a perfect addition to a nightly routine which goes a long way in helping you sleep better.
