What’s the number one problem you face in your laundry? Your socks mysteriously being eaten by the washing machine? Or the amount of environmentally harmful products that seem to live in this one room? To be fair, both are probably equally as frustrating. While I can’t solve your sock-kidnapping issue (seriously- where do they GO?), I can help make your laundry significantly more environmentally-friendly.
Chances are, like most people, your laundry is the one room in the house that feels overwhelming to make ‘environmentally friendly.’ Now days there are just so many chemicals in the ordinary laundry that many wouldn’t even know there is another way to do it!
But, there are plenty of ways to make your laundry more environmentally friendly. The benefits of doing so are obviously huge- less pollutants in the air and ocean, less chemicals being absorbed into your washing, cleaner air in your family home and a lower impact on the planet. I’ve rounded up my favourite environmentally-friendly laundry products below- I hope you enjoy using them!
Laundry hampers don’t need to be unsightly things that you have to nag your teenagers to use. I love having natural textures in my home, and am in love with these hampers from GrasShanghai. I’m actually considering buying one for my Fiddleleaf Fig Tree to sit in! This Etsy stores is run by Betty who aims to keep the traditional weaving techniques of her village alive. Her mother weaves 70% of the goods purchased through their store and how beautiful is the outcome! I would be very happy with this hamper taking pride of place in my laundry.
In The Wash
We all know how I feel about soapberries (hint- I love them) and you can purchase your own long-lasting pack here. If you’re wanting to expand your soapberry game, you can also buy a No Chemical Crap Kit by That Red House. It includes your soapberries, guar gum, citric acid, laundry tonic, glass spray bottle with a pump, and recipes for a range of household products. This means you can use your soapberries in your washing machine and on your laundry benches as a surface spray. Multitasking at its finest!
Ethique (whose shampoo and conditioner I swear by for silky locks) create a handy-dandy solid laundry bar and stain remover. This bar is perfect for hand washing any delicate clothing you may have (for more hints on ensuring your pretty garments last, check out my guide) or as a stain-remover pre-washing in the machine. Bonus- Ethique’s packaging is also compostable!
Guppyfriend is an ingenious little invention that will go a long way to save our precious oceans. Until I came across these on Instagram, I had no idea that microfibres from our synthetic materials make their way from our washing machine into the earth’s rivers and oceans. The Guppyfriend is a wash bag that filters out these fibres, trapping them within the bag. After washing your clothes, just dispose of the microfibres properly. You can learn all about these amazing planet-savers here.
Air-drying your clothes is definitely the most environmentally friendly option, as the only energy it requires comes from the sun or heat within your home!
You have a couple of options with pegs, and those nasty multi-coloured plastic ones that break way too easily are not one of them. These biodegradable bamboo pegs by Go Bamboo come in a 20 pack (recycled packaging). They do need to be shown some love and kept in a dry environment, however.
Otherwise, these little guys are completely stainless steel and come in a cotton bag. They work great for heavy clothing, and won’t give way when the breeze gets some power behind it. They also need to be kept in a dry environment but will last for years and years if you shown them some TLC.
Wooden Drying Rack
Most clothes drying racks now days are nasty contraptions made of plastic that can be relied on to collapse unexpectedly. Variant Spaces over on Etsy has some amazing wooden designs that are eco-friendly (FSC certified sustainably sourced NZ Pine plywood and NZ pine dowels) and look beautiful! This clever laundry rack works on a pulley system to save space in your home.
In the middle of winter when you just don’t have enough room to dry all of your washing on racks, your dryer does come in handy. Wooly Mates are made from pure Australian wool, and are designed to assist in the drying time and softening of your clothes in the dryer. They are designed to last for years, and contain absolutely zero nasties!
When it comes to natural home surface cleaning products, we are about to delve into a brand that I adore! Bondi Wash was started by mother of three Belinda in 2013 who was inspired by the incredible flora of Australian natives. The result is a 99-100% plant-based home cleaning range of beautiful products designed to keep your home and family safe and healthy. I’ve listed some of my favourite Bondi Wash products for your laundry below…
Bondi Wash- Bench Spray
This home grown Aussie brand is doing wonders in the natural home cleaning world, and their products smell amazing, too! You can keep your benches clean and hygienic with the Bondi Wash Bench Spray, while filling the room with uplifting Eucalyptus notes. The spray contains Australian bush oils, and food grade non-paraben preservatives for a healthy home. This spray can actually be used all around the house (you can use it oncaesarstone, timber, granite, laminate, stainless steel, plastic and glass according to their website), but I particularly love a fresh smell in the laundry!
Bondi Wash- Floor Cleaner
If you’re on Maia, chances are you are interested in natural home cleaning. Up until beginning my own eco-journey, my partner and I would have strong reactions to chemical-based floor cleaners, as they omitted all manner of nasties into our home. This Tasmanian Pepper and Lavender Floor Cleaner ensures that your floors will be sparkling clean and germ-free, but without the horrible chemical smells or particles in the air.
Bondi Wash Linen Sprays
Bondi Wash does two gorgeous room and linen sprays (I love a bit of versatility, don’t you?). The first scent is the Tasmanian Pepper and Lavender, (designed to calm and relax) while the second is a cooling and refreshing Sydney Peppermint and Rosemary. These sprays are anti-bacterial and based on Australian bush oils. They can be used to refresh rooms, linens, sheets- you name it! Plus, like all Bondi Wash products, the packaging looks gorgeous on display as well .
So there you go- my top tips for a more environmentally-friendly laundry. Cutting back the amount of chemicals and pollutants released in just one laundry can make a huge difference. Remember, it’s the small things we do every day that add up to a healthier, happier planet!
